Why It Matters
NCAA & NAIA Basketball Programs Require Qualifying Insurance
Every Australian and New Zealand basketball player heading to a US college on a scholarship must hold health insurance that satisfies their program's requirements before they can be cleared to train or compete. Australian Medicare does not cover you in the USA.
USA College Cover is an authorised representative of the partner insurers we quote and present to clients — we are not an insurer or broker. These plans meet the minimum requirements for athletic associations such as NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA, and in many cases exceed comparable US plans. This includes UNLIMITED overseas medical cover (on and off the field and in your own leisure time, with 24/7 medical support), cover for ALL US medical networks so you can be admitted anywhere, emergency evacuation and repatriation back to your home country, repatriation of remains, and personal liability cover — priced in AUD or NZD from Australian and NZ-regulated companies.

Frequently Asked Questions — Basketball Scholarship Insurance
Do Australian basketball players need insurance for a US college scholarship?
Yes. All NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA programs require student-athletes — including international basketball players — to hold qualifying health insurance before they can train or compete. Australian and NZ-regulated plans arranged through USA College Cover are designed to satisfy these requirements.
What does a typical basketball injury in the USA cost without insurance?
Without insurance, a single ACL repair in the USA can cost between USD $20,000–$50,000+. An emergency hospitalisation can easily exceed USD $100,000. Australian Medicare and private health funds do not cover you in the USA, so qualifying cover is essential.
Can I use my Australian private health insurance for my US college basketball program?
Generally no — Australian private health funds (e.g. Medibank, Bupa) do not provide the type of primary cover required by US colleges. A specialist student-athlete plan from an Australian insurer approved for US study is required.
How early should I arrange insurance before my basketball season starts?
We recommend starting the process as early as possible — ideally 6–8 weeks before your departure date. Some colleges require proof of insurance before you arrive on campus, and earlier applications give you more time to satisfy any compliance documentation requests from your school's Athletic Compliance Officer.
